National Native Title Conference 2014 - Coffs Harbour

This year’s Annual National Native Title Conference, convened by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the NTSCorp. was held on the traditional lands of the Gumbaynggirr people People, the Native Title Holders of landaround Coffs Harbour, NSW.

This years Conference held at the beautiful Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay Resort 2-4 June was an opportunity for people to come together and engage in debate, including native title holders and claimants, traditional owners, native title representative bodies and service agencies, the Federal Court, National Native Title Tribunal, Commonwealth and State government agencies, academics, consultants and industry representatives. 

This year a small contingent of NQLC representatives including Board Members, Traditional Owners and staff from NQLC attended the Conference to participate in the discussions over the three days of the Conference.  Some of the highlights include discussions around Constitutional Recognition, the establishment of a First National Assembly and Language, Cultural and Land management.  

One of the larger discusions surrounded the idea of a First Nations Assembly which was discussed last year at the Alice Springs Conference.
